Orange :: From Life

Posted on January 17, 2009

I started this painting with burnt umber and white. After letting that layer dry I applied the colour on top.

Using that method I was able to apply thinner layers of colour which further allowed me to apply more layers as time went on.

Oil Painting :: Two Studies

Posted on January 15, 2009

Over the last few days I have using the oil paints more and more. So far I have done three painting over the last three days.

These are two that are complete and starting to dry. Very much an impressionistic style to both of these.

Oil Painting :: Adding a new Medium

Posted on January 11, 2009

With my success in pastel painting I felt it was time to add a new medium to my repertoire for no other reason than for my growth as an artist.

It is very similar to pastels and I can see it being a benefit to my pastel work over time. One advantage it does have over pastels is that I can create my own colours as I need them to suit instead of searching for that particular colour in my sea of sticks.

Now I just have to practice, practice, practice to feel more at ease with the medium and the new process it offers.

New Medium :: Oil Paint

Posted on January 7, 2009

Well, it official. I have moved into a new medium – oil paints. I have to say it is much more difficult than it looks. I found myself either having too little or too much paint on the brush, forgetting to clean my brushes and a handfull of other things that will take awhile to get used to.

All in all it was a very enjoyable experience. This result is OK for me and I would have liked to get a little more detail into it, but with working wet in wet it was difficult.

I think I’ll practice more before trying another.

Gamblin Oil Paint :: From Life

Posted on January 6, 2009

I finally got my still life stand set up beside my easel. Now I just need to try and use it everyday.

Today I took one of the first things I saw, a tube of ultramarine gamblin oil paint, and painted it from life. I started with a sketch then toned the board using watercolours. After it was dry it was time for the pastel.
