Book Review :: Blue & Yellow don’t make Green
Posted on December 31, 2008

Blue & Yellow don’t make Green by Michael Wilcox changed the entire way I think about colour while providing a great guide on how to mix a colour I want right off the bat. No more guessing at what you need.
The theory is backed by science which makes it all the more reputable. The author talks about how light reflects through a pigment to create the actual colour the viewer sees. If you understand light and the principals behind a prism it will all makes sense.
As the title states, blue and yellow do not make green, believe it or not. What makes the green is the residual green colour that exists in yellow and blue (the pigments are not a PURE primary), as the yellow and blue cancel each other out. Intrigued? I suggest any artists that has any desire to learn about colour mixing get this book.

Portraits and Figures
Posted on December 23, 2008
I think 2009 will be about moving forward into painting figures and portraits.
Objects are easy, for what they are worth, just lines and colour in a static position. Portraits and figures, although drawn in a pose, are more dynamic and expectant of life. Besides it is much more difficult to get the likeness in a portrait than it is to copy the shape of flowers and fruit.

Figure Drawing
Posted on December 15, 2008
I decided to participate in a figure drawing thread in the WetCanvas forums. This sketch is from a specific pose available at posespace.com that provides nude models for life drawing. What a great resource.
The sketch took about 10 minutes in total and turned out well. My only issue is with the hands. It looks like I have to develop a way to represent the hands without actually drawing them.
